Starting in Bicknell gives you plenty of options. Food, Fuel, lodging, camping and even a carwash.
We started at the city park a block North of main street. It’s okay to park alongside the the street and there is room for large rigs.
The Dark Valley trail will accommodate any size vehicle.
Fast gravel roads give way to relatively smooth trails as you get into the trees and becomes much slower going but no need for 4WD unless there is snow or rain.
There is limited signage at the beginning of the trail but none further along the trail.
Emergencies dial 911.

The Dark Valley Trail is located on the Boulder Mountain Western slopes, accessed from the North via Loa, Bicknell, Teasdale or Torrey.

We started in Loa. Following Main Street south maintain a southerly course on South Main until it turns to Big Rock Road after the highway makes a 90 degree turn towards Lyman. Just keep heading south when you reach Big Hollow Rd which will take you up onto the mountain.

After several miles of hard gravel road the trail slowly turns to unmaintained forest trail. TIs a pretty good trail and you shouldn’t need 4WD unless recent rain or snow have really soaked the ground.

There are a lot of Quaking Aspen along this trail and is a fantastic fall ride with a lot of color.

The large herd of Antelope that makes the plateau home like to hang out in the trees in this area.
